Stock colors cover 80% of commercial projects. That's a fact. But for the project where the designer has a specific color vision — a hotel brand's signature blue, a healthcare system's corporate teal, a university's school color — custom color matching is the answer. I've been through this process hundreds of times over the last 12 years, so here's how it actually works.
At Guangdong Wiselink Ltd., the custom color process runs through four stages: submission of a color standard, lab formulation and sample casting, sample approval, and production. Minimum is 100 sheets, lead time runs 20–30 days after sample approval, and the cost premium is typically 20–40% over stock colors.
Step 1: Submit a color standard. Send us a physical or digital color reference. We accept Pantone codes, physical paint chips or swatches, tile samples, fabric swatches, laminate samples, RAL codes, or an existing color sample you'd like to match. Digital RGB/HEX values alone aren't sufficient — monitors vary, and what looks like "warm white" on screen could come out pale yellow in production. A physical standard or Pantone reference is required. The best color standard is at least 2" x 2" with a flat, matte finish.
Step 2: Lab formulation. Your color standard goes to Wiselink's in-house R&D lab in Foshan. Our colorist evaluates it under D65 daylight standard illumination and selects a starting pigment formulation from our database — which contains over 400+ archived color formulas built over 12 years of production. A test batch is mixed and cast as a small sample panel (roughly 6" x 6" x 12mm). The panel is cured, sanded, and measured against your standard using a spectrophotometer. First-attempt match rate is approximately 70%. For the 30% that don't hit Delta E ≤ 1.0 on first try, the colorist adjusts pigment ratios and casts another sample. Most matches are locked within 2–3 iterations.
Step 3: Sample approval. The 6" x 6" sample panel is shipped to you for physical approval. We recommend visual inspection under the lighting conditions where the material will be installed — fluorescent, LED, or natural daylight can alter perceived color. Sample shipment takes 5–7 business days via express courier (DHL, FedEx). Cost is covered by Wiselink for initial custom color samples. Once you approve, email confirmation is sufficient, and the formula is locked in the production system. That formula is archived for future re-orders, so reordering a custom color even years later is straightforward.
Step 4: Production. Once approved, your color formula goes to production. The mixing department uses the archived formula to produce the full batch. A QC sample from the production batch is tested against your approved sample before the batch is released for casting. Every production batch of custom color is QC-checked against the original approved sample, not against a previous production run. This prevents batch drift.
Standard custom color MOQ is 100 sheets. At standard sheet size (2,440 x 760 mm), that's approximately 1,850 sq ft of material — enough for roughly half of a 200-room hotel project with vanity tops. The reason for 100 sheets is the pigment mixing system: our production mixers have a minimum batch size that produces about 100–120 sheets. Running smaller batches would create disproportionate waste. We can make exceptions — trial quantities of 50 sheets at a 30% surcharge, repeat orders above 30 sheets once a custom color is in production, and more flexible MOQ for FF&E components versus raw sheet.
Sample preparation takes 5–7 business days for the first sample, with revisions adding 2–3 business days per iteration. Production after sample approval runs 20–30 days for 100+ sheets. Total timeline for first-time custom color: 25–37 days from standard submission to production completion, compared to 15–20 days for stock colors. For re-orders of an existing custom color, it's 15–20 days — the formula is already archived and no sample process is needed.
Custom colors cost more for three reasons: R&D labor for colorist time, material waste from sample casting and purge runs, and production inefficiency from smaller batch sizes. Typical cost premium: standard color match at 20–30% above stock, complex match (translucent/veined/multi-pigment) at 30–40%, translucent/backlit-grade at 40–60%, and small batch (50 sheets) adds 30% on top. Stock color pricing for Wiselink 12mm runs approximately $3.50–$5.50/sq ft FOB. Custom color at 25% premium adds about $0.90–$1.40/sq ft. On a 200-sheet order, the premium is roughly $2,500–$4,000. In context of a $150,000–$250,000 FF&E package, that's manageable.
For most projects, a hybrid approach works best. Use stock colors for back-of-house areas, bathrooms in non-branded hotels, projects where the specifier isn't specific about color, and projects under 100 sheets where custom MOQ is uneconomical. Use custom colors for branded hospitality (Marriott's specific white, Hilton's warm gray), healthcare systems with established color palettes, university or institutional colors, and projects where the architect has specified a unique color.
What Wiselink recommends: if 30% or more of your project requires a specific color different from stock, custom color is worth the premium and lead time. For a project where one accent color is needed, use stock colors for the bulk and the custom color only for accent surfaces.
Not everything is achievable in acrylic solid surface. Neon and bright fluorescent colors require pigment concentrations that exceed what's stable in the acrylic matrix — the color will fade within 1–3 years in UV exposure. Translucent or transparent colors require a different base formulation with higher cost. Metallic or glitter-effect finishes can't be done without surface texture issues. Extremely dark colors near-black are technically achievable but show every surface scratch more visibly. High-gloss finish isn't a material property — solid surface ships matte/satin and gloss is achieved through fabrication-stage buffing and polishing.
Q: Can I get multiple custom colors on the same order?
A: Yes, but each color is subject to its own MOQ and premium. Two custom colors on one order would mean minimum 200 sheets and two separate production runs.
Q: Do I own the color formula?
A: Yes. The formulation is archived under your account. It's not shared with other customers. You can re-order the color at any time.
Q: What if the color doesn't match on-site?
A: We retain your approved physical sample. If the production batch doesn't match the sample, we replace the sheets. Delta E ≤ 1.0 is a tight tolerance.
Q: Can I order custom color FF&E components instead of sheets?
A: Yes. Same custom color process applies. Adds 7–10 days for fabrication.
Q: Does Wiselink charge for color matching if I don't place an order?
A: The initial sample is complimentary. If extensive iteration is needed (4+ rounds) and no order follows, we may charge a nominal sample fee. This is disclosed upfront.
