Multifamily housing is not the same as hospitality. The two are often lumped together under "commercial interiors," but anyone who has managed both will tell you the differences are fundamental. Hotels renovate on a cycle of five to seven years. Apartments may go ten, fifteen, even twenty years between full renovations. Hotels have professional housekeeping staff cleaning every room every day. Apartments have tenants who clean once a month — or once a lease.
And the biggest difference of all: hotels never have a tenant treat the shower like they do not care.
Apartment bathrooms absorb more abuse per square foot than any other room in the building. The shower enclosure gets the worst of it. Soap scum builds up. Hard water deposits crust the fixtures. Cleaning chemicals of unknown origin get applied. And between tenants, the shower needs to look like new — or the next renter will demand a discount or walk away entirely.
This is why a growing number of multifamily developers and owners are looking hard at cast marble shower solutions. Not because they are the cheapest option on paper. They are not always. But because the total cost of ownership over a fifteen-year hold tells a different story than the installed price alone.
Ceramic and porcelain tile has been the default shower wall in apartments for decades. It is durable in the sense that a single tile will last for decades. But a shower wall is not a single tile. It is a system of tiles bonded to a substrate with thin-set mortar and finished with grout. The system fails in ways that individual tiles do not.
Grout failure is inevitable. Grout is cement-based. It is porous. It absorbs moisture, soap residue, and body oils. Getting an apartment shower truly clean between tenants requires heavy cleaning chemicals, aggressive scrubbing, and time. Some apartment developers try to dodge tile maintenance by using one-piece fiberglass shower surrounds. This solves the grout problem, but it introduces a new one: fiberglass is a soft material. Cast marble — also called cultured marble or cast polymer — is a blend of crushed limestone or marble dust mixed with polyester resin, cast into a mold, and finished with a gel coat. The result is a solid, non-porous surface with no seams in the field of the panel.
For multifamily applications, here is where it performs.
Zero grout maintenance. This is the headline benefit and it is real. A cast marble shower wall is one continuous surface. There is no grout to scrub, seal, or repair. Between tenants, the cleaning protocol is: wipe down with mild cleaner, rinse, dry. Twenty minutes. Done.
Scratch resistance that matters. The gel coat on quality cast marble is hard enough that normal apartment use will not scratch it. A tenant's plastic shampoo caddy, a rubber bath mat, routine wiping — none of these leave marks. Even if a scratch does occur, the fix is simple. Light scratches buff out with polishing compound. A tile shower wall installation (ceramic tile, cement board substrate, grout) runs approximately $18 to $30 per square foot installed. Is cast marble slippery when wet?
No. The gel coat finish has natural micro-texture that provides adequate traction. Most people find it comparable to tile or fiberglass. For ADA compliance, textured bottoms or slip-resistant strips can be added to the shower pan.
Can cast marble be installed over existing tile?
Yes, in most cases. A cast marble panel system can be installed directly over existing tile if the substrate is sound. This is a common approach in apartment renovations where the goal is to avoid demolition mess.
How does cast marble handle hard water?
